First of all, what is your grandson's phone make and model?

And is his phone unlocked?

The phone is a galaxy ace gts5830t with a telsra sim card it has been working since xmas now it says no sim card i thought maybe he has pressed some buttons he has a little brother who may have done something

First please take the battery out and SIM card out. Wait for 5 minutes. Put SIM card in and battery back in. Turn the phone on. See if the phone can access network and make calls. Thank you.

I did that and it still says no sim card

Please do the following steps to reset your phone settings:

Go to Settings

Select Applications

Select Manage Applications

Select All

Select Google Services Framework

Select Clear Data.

Turn your device off and back on.

Test your SIM card and phone again. Thank you.

Can you make sure that the SIM card is inserted under the metal pins, not on top of them, so that they are making proper contact.
