Just bought the Straight Talk ZTE Merit.

This answer was rated:

Just bought the Straight Talk ZTE Merit. I wanted it to speak the name of the person calling... but now it speaks EVERYTHING!!! Even reads my messages out loud! Is there any way to have it JUST speak the caller's name? Also, I had my email set up so that when I hit the icon it opens right up. Since my phone is 'sometimes' shared, I decided I'd rather have to put in my password XXXXX time. Can you help me figure this one out too? I am NOT savvy with these things. Please help in simple terms that even 'dummies' can follow... ?

Also on the ZTE Merit, I want it to alert me when I receive texts and of course phone calls ONLY. Right now it alerts me with every email too! How do I get it to stop the email notifications, and also show me onscreen when I receive a text and when I miss a call???? SO much to learn about this phone!!

RichieMe :

Hi there, and welcome to JustAnswer, I look forward to assisting you today with your question and providing the best answer possible.

RichieMe :

The speaking functionality on this phone is an all or nothing sorry

RichieMe :

Either it will read out everything, or nothing at all

RichieMe :

For notifications, go to settings, notifications. You can then set how you want the different notifications to occur

RichieMe :

If you have any difficulties, please do not hesitate to let me know

RichieMe :
Customer:

There is no 'notifications' option under settings. What now?

RichieMe :

Sorry, you need to go Settings > Sound > Notification Ringtone

RichieMe :

For the email, you want a password XXXXX show each time you open email on the phone? This level of customisation wont be possible sorry, you can only set a passcode on the entire phone, not per functions sorry

Customer:

That only lets me to set which sound I want it to make... not whether or not I want text/email sounds. I do want text sounds... but NOT email sounds.

RichieMe :

ok, but that is the extent of the customisation sorry

RichieMe :

IT only deals with notifications as a whole, not per individual functions

RichieMe :

Please bear in mind this is a very simple phone

RichieMe :

There is not a lot of customising that can be done as opposed to a more functional HTC or Samsung

Customer:

I am VERY disappointed!!! Maybe I should return this phone then... I was hoping for an android that was powered by at&t... this is my only option with them?

RichieMe :

Let me check on your other options, now that I know what you want in terms of functionality

RichieMe :

one moment please

RichieMe :

ok, you can get the LG Optimus Black from them

RichieMe :

This will allow you to customise all ring tones

RichieMe :

but no phone offers password XXXXX each time you open email

RichieMe :

Either the latest Android or iPhone does not offer this yet

RichieMe :

but on the LG I recommended, you can specify unique notifications on any app

RichieMe :

I hope that is helpful

Customer:

Is the lg optimus available through straight talk? the zte merit is... this is who my service is through right now

RichieMe :

I checked this for you

Customer:

Do you 'HAPPEN' to have a price on that phone??

RichieMe :

$329 is what Straight Talk is listing it for

RichieMe :

I am getting the manual for you

RichieMe :

you can download it from here (free)

Customer:

Wow! I would think for that price it would tuck me in at night... lol

RichieMe :

haha, Usually your looking at about $600-$800 for a very good phone

Customer:

Like I said, I'm certainly not savvy...

RichieMe :

the more expensive, the more intuitive they are

RichieMe :

have you looked at the iPhone?

Customer:

No. Would you mind telling me all about it? Including costs?

Customer:

Is it serviced through Apple? Service costs?

RichieMe :

ok, service costs are covered by warranty

RichieMe :

your looking at around $600

RichieMe :

it is the most intuitive phone out of them all. Very easy to understand from the start

RichieMe :

very customisable, and it now includes free backup of contacts, email and photos

RichieMe :

you can also locate the phone via a map if you lose it

RichieMe :

and they are pretty reliable

RichieMe :

I think for you who is not intrested in all the "advanced" functionality and wants something straight forward yet intelligent

RichieMe :

this is probably the way to go for you

Customer:

Who is this service through?

RichieMe :

AT&T or Verizon

RichieMe :

Not by Straightalk unfortunatly

RichieMe :

but

Customer:

People really have $600 to spend on a phone??

RichieMe :

more

RichieMe :

up to $1000

RichieMe :

there like computers nowadays

Customer:

LG Optimus is the same but cheaper? It will do all the functions I've asked you about?

RichieMe :

it will do the notifications

RichieMe :

no phone does the email password XXXXX you wish for

Customer:

I don't need music or movie downloads... no need for those. email password XXXXX XXXXX a problem. I can simply get to that through the internet service...

RichieMe :

then the LG would be really good for you

Customer:

I just want phone, text, email and Internet service... as cheaply as possible

Customer:

LG Optimus, right?

RichieMe :

correct

RichieMe :

this gives you a pretty powerful (customizable) phone at a good price

Customer:

I'll check it out... Can't thank you enough for all your help... truly. I live in the 'boonies' and at&t gives me good service. I already have the 'elevate' for internet service through them. Would I be better off using their $50/month no contract service?

RichieMe :

do you want to stay fixed with them?

RichieMe :

The contract (50/month) is always cheaper

RichieMe :

in the long run is you plan on sticking with them

Customer:

Straight talk is $45... that's what I have now... powered by at&t

RichieMe :

yeah, its the same, just a little cheaper

RichieMe :

and less choice of phones

Customer:

Is the $50/month at&t plan unlimited too?

RichieMe :

no, they stopped that now

RichieMe :

You need to check with them the limit

RichieMe :

as its different per area

Customer:

What phone would you recommend through at&t service?

RichieMe :

for you, i feel the iPhone is best

RichieMe :

I am very sure you would love it

Customer:

Whew! I'm afraid the $600 cost is just more than I can see myself paying... now that would really hurt!! I'm on a VERY limited income!!! VERY limited...

RichieMe :

thats outright, see what AT&T offer

RichieMe :

sometimes they charge 65 per month and phone is free

RichieMe :

depends on the special they have, I would recommend you calling them

Customer:

GOOD phone though??

RichieMe :

yes, 100million sold means something :-)

Customer:

Haha!! I guess so...

Customer:

You've been great...

RichieMe :

thanks!

RichieMe :

feel free to ask if you want more information

RichieMe :
Customer:

Have a wonderful day!!

RichieMe :

you too!!!
