Legend L: There has been a humming sound coming from the alternator

This answer was rated:

There has been a humming sound coming from the alternator of my 1994 Acura Legend L for the last several months. The sound is not very loud, but is more pronounced when there is a heavy draw on the electrical system (e.g. high beam headlights). Should the alternator be replaced now, or is failure likely to be slow and gradual?
