Acura MDX sport: I have a 2007 MDX Sport, 98,000 miles and

Resolved Question:

I have a 2007 MDX Sport, 98,000 miles and have the same clicking noise when turning as referrred to by other owners. I also get some clunking sounds when driving slow on uneven surface. Acura replaced the strut mounts; no change. Suspect the strut will need to be replaced. The struts were replace 18 months, 20,000 miles ago because they were shot ( severe thud when going over a speed bump).
Is there a design problem with Acura or the strut manufacturer?

Does this clicking noise only happen when making slow turns or while turning the wheel when at a stop?

Did the noise seem to change at all when the dealer replaced the strut tops?

maybe slightly. also get the clunking sound when on uneven surface; before this seemed to occur more when slowly coming to a stop.

Ok. Did the dealer check the rest of the suspension components when doing the strut work?

Customer:

Their original inspection resulted in the opinion that the strut and mount should be changed at cost of nearly $1200. After contacting Acura Regional Customer Service, they suggested we try changing the mount, split the cost.

It honestly does sound like the dealer is on the right track but I wonder if they replaced all components that are involved with the strut mount. Each mount also has the bearing, spring seat, and spring cushion. These should also be lubed heavily when installing to prevent any type of noise.

There are also occasions when the strut itself combined the strut mount cause the problem which would require complete replacement.

Acura has not identified a design problem at this point on this strut set up. If the strut was replaced 20K miles ago and is deemed to be bad again I would hope the dealer would help with the repair.

Customer:

Probably so re replacement of strut. My concerns: 1) so far they say I must pay the bill. 2) the strut was replaced 18 months ago; if this is a design flaw, I may see this again in another 18 months

I can understand your concern with the strut failing again so soon. Did the offer any kind of help on the repair since the struts were just replaced?

Customer:

nope; their original reply was no; then we changed the mount. but the regional customer service manager is in tomorrow and has asked to take it for a drive. May get lucky but not expecting much. Not inclined to pay the cost with all the unknowns, so if they will not pay, I will probably trade it in - for something other than an Acura.

They are good vehicles but with the Sport model having the Active Damper System it makes for a much more expensive repair on these struts. I would not blame you on trading it if the Regional Manager will not offer some kind of assistance on this problem.

I would hope that with replacing these struts within the past 18 months that they would replace them for you at no charge since they seem to be causing your problems again. I hope that they will help you on this problem.

yes, guess I will find out their position tomorrow. They have not acknowledged any trend with these vehicles; guess they do not want to admit there is an issue.

Sounds that way......I have seen a few struts that needed replacing in this model but none after having been replaced 18 months previous.
