CL Type S: I want to buy an 01-03 Acura CL Type S. I know about

This answer was rated:

I want to buy an 01-03 Acura CL Type S. I know about the transmission problems with these cars (I used to have an 01 CL Type S). Is there any way to avoid the transmission problem -- are the 03 cars less prone to it than the 01 cars? Are any VINs less prone to it? Barring that, is there anything to look for on a pre-purchase inspection regarding the transmission? Thanks.

MASTER TECH :

these are is no specific range on these cars

Customer:

hi

Customer:

so all are affected, even 2003?

MASTER TECH :

in fact I have had a couple customers at my dealer that are still on their original transmission

MASTER TECH :

Hello yes they are all affected.

Customer:

on a pre-purchase test drive, is there anything i can do to test the transmission?

MASTER TECH :

if the transmission does have a slip when shifting or a harsh shift.

Customer:

right, but any specific speed or driving pattern i should use to test?

MASTER TECH :

also look at the transmission fluid see if it has a burnt smell like a burnt candle.

Customer:

is it the 2->3 shift?

MASTER TECH :

you should do some fast take offs and once your up to cruise speed then step on it to make it down shift and see how it shifts

MASTER TECH :

yes most issues are in the 2-3 up shift

MASTER TECH :

hard acceleration will normally show a issue

Customer:

aha good, thanks

Customer:

is there any truth to the idea that if a car made it to 100K miles without transmission problems, the transmission will be ok?

MASTER TECH :

nope all false

Customer:

my old 2001 CL developed the transmission problem at only about 50K miles

Customer:

got it, thanks

Customer:

thank you!
