My 2002 Acura TL has started driving in violent jerks while accelerating - delayed acceleration and then jerks and throws forward
Optional Information: Year : 2002 Make : Acura Model: 3.2 TL Engine: V6
Hello I will be glad to help you with your Acura questions today.
Is there a check engine light on? Also have you checked your transmission fluid to make sure it is full?
Engine light is not on. Transmission fluid was recently changed at Acura service in the dealership after which it has run only some 600 miles.
Ok does the transmission seem to shift properly? It seems as though your transmission is starting to fail and causing your problem.
Transmission does shift properly. What happens after I have slowed down and then I press on the gas to pick up speed , the engine seems to race / runs faster, but the car doesn't get the acceleration, And then it jerks as it it sudddenlty senses the accleration ( at times it has throw me forward whiile it gets that sudden jerk ) The jer happens a couple of time befor engines gets the speed
Car has done some 130000 miles and I have serviced at regular milestones.
That really sounds like the transmission is slipping under heavy accel and then snaps into gear.......this model TL was bad about the transmission failing internally and causing this type of problem.
Ok, then to wrap up
1. Would they have not sensed that this may happen when I servoced it so recntly within the last month
If they test drove it under those conditions they should have......did you ask them to look at the problem?
Not yet - haven't asked them . Since it happened so soon after their service, I lost a bit of confidence and fel;t they didn't catch it ahead or be proactive
and - with 130 k miles on it replacing the transmission - is it worth it I thought Acuras could do over 150 k and more?
I can understand you feeling that way and I would have to agree with you. If they test drove the car after the service they should have picked up on the shifting problems.
And final qn after above - is there anything else I could look for as a symptom / check myself to make sure it is a transmission issue or not ? before commtting to more expense
That is really your call........you can have them re-built for around $2500 and that to me would be worth it but to have a reman unit installed you will be looking at $4-5000.
In that case I would say that it is not worth repairing.
And if you could answer that final qn, that would be all - I would very much appreciate - namely : And final qn after above - is there anything else I could look for as a symptom / check myself to make sure it is a transmission issue or not ? before commtting to more expense
If there was a Check Engine Light on I would advise you to have that checked before the transmission but from your description the trans is what really seems to be failing.
I would check the engine mounts since they can cause a hard shift when broken......but the jerking really leads me to the transmission.
Even the engine mounts was changed just 6 months back by my the relaiable neighbourhood mechanic
Ok that rules that out then......the mounts are the only other component that would cause a little bit of a harsh shift.
Ok, thanks then, If there is anyhting else as a symptom I could validate to confirm transmission, you may advise me.
If not , please feel free to wrap up - and thanks and appreciate yr inputs
If nothing more we can wrap up. Thank you for yr good service and I will rate it so
I really don't have any other advice as how to confirm the transmission. Usually when I test drive a car I can just feel the improper shift points and slipping of the trans like you are descrbing. I would have you local mechanic drive it and see what he think but I really believe the transmission is going to be the problem.
And last qn - do you think I can verify if its transmission by driving on D4 instead of D5
Thank You for letting me assist you today and please remember to rate me at Excellent Service.
You can try that but if the problem is in 2nd or 3rd gear it will still act up in the D4 position.
Ok, thanks that should do
Ok let me know if you have any other questions and I will be glad to help. Please remember to rate me at Excellent Service.
Hello, I would go ahead and rate Excellent service this time around. Actually earlier I was split between excellent and good and was inclined to go as "good" 9as I mentioned in my earlier msg ). As a suggestion for you if you don't mind, I think more leading qns / probing qns from yr end instead of my having to come up with qns would make it easier to rate as excellent - this time I am rating as excellent
Thanks for the advice and I will use that in the future. Thank you again.
