Hi Sir or Madam, welcome to Pearl.com. I'm acuramstr. Unfortunately yes it is the DVD unit under the seat is failing and will need to be repaired. Alpine no longer services these in the factory facility but there are some independent shops that will still fix them. Here is a link to a shop that can fix the under seat unit for you. http://www.hitechserv.com/electronics-repair/oem-navigation-dvd-cd-changer-repair/65

If there is anything else I can help you with let me know.

Thanks for the info, but I do have an update. When I slightly bang the dashboard on top of where the navigation system is located, the navigation system turns on and works normal. It will then turn off after 10 minutes. Another bang is then required for the screen to turn on again. FYI - what's the easiest way to locate the password XXX the navigation unit. We lost the owners manual wi the code. We were able to figure out the code for the radio, but no success with the navigation password

Ok this sounds like the back light in the display is going out. The same place should be able to repair the display as well. To get the navi code you need to remove the unit under the seat and get the serial number. Then you can post it back to me and I can get your code .
