when I try to attach document (invoice) to an expense entry in Quicken 2010, most of the times I get an error messege "Quicken cannot attach the file because it is already in use, Please close the program runing the file and then try again" no programs are runing except Quicken

window 7, yes I do have Adobe Reader XI installed

Uninstall it, restart the computer and then reinstall Reader.

Then restart the computer again and try to attach a document and Let me know the results please

Do I have to install and uninstall reader every time I attach a document?

you only need to do it once.

But one thing, is the Scanner program still open when you try to attach?

You just need to make sure the program you use for scanning is closed before trying to attach the document.

We tried your recommendations, sometime it works but mostly not able to attache the receipt to the entry in quicken

Are you sure the Scanner program and all other programs are closed when you do this.

This is nearly always the problem.

Click Start, type in MSCONFIG and press enter.

Click on the Startup Tab and click Disable All.

Click on the Services Tab and click "Hide All Microsoft Services"

Then click Disable All

Click ok, restart and test if you still have the problem.

RichieMe, Thank you for all your help, I don't have the time to do it now. I will as soon as I get a chance and get back with you. Sorry it is taking so long. I forgot to mention earlier that I get that problem sometime also when I try to attach a receipt that I downloaded from the internet.

I am sorry to say that the problem persist even after reinstating Quicken. When I start quicken program and scan documents, the first document get attached without a problem, the second time I try to attach a document to an entry I get the same error message

if you scan, then restart the computer and try to attach.

I did try that in the past and it did not,

ok, there is a program running in the background causing this.

I advise to use this method, or you need to make 100% sure (via Task Manager / Processors) that the scanner programmer or anything else is not open.

I am really sorry to say that the problem still persist, Above all I would like to thank you for your patience and for sure will write a complementary review for your continuous help over several days and prompt no matter what time of the day. I don't know if and how to pursue fixing the problem because I would very much like to use this feature.


 


The latest I tried is to turn off the computer (laptop) took out the battery waited 10 min before turning the laptop back on and starting only Quicken. I tried to attach documents that were already in my documents and the same error message appeared.

ok, lets make sure nothing is wrong with Windows by doing the following.

Download CC Cleaner (free) from here

CC Cleaner

(Click Download Latest Version on the top right)

Run it and let it scan and repair your registry.

Once done, restart the computer

Than

Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and select Run As Administrator.

A black window will open.

Type in it

sfc /scannow

press enter and when it has completed, type in

chkdsk /f

Press enter.

It will complain the Volume is in use and to run on restart. Say YES and restart the computer

Than test and Let me know the results please

When I typed sfc/scannow this message appeared "Window Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in CBS.log Windir\logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example c:\windows\logs\CBS\CBS.log"

Can you click Start, Control Panel.

Go to User Accounts and make a new user account.

Restart the computer and log in with this new user account and try to attach and tell me please if you still have the problem.

ok, so it is your account that is corrupt.

Your going to have to this new account as everything to repair an account we have already done.

But all your Applications are still available.

But you will need to use this new account sorry.

I did not check everything but at least all documents are not opening by the new user and I have a program called MYOB which did not transfer

what is the error you get when you try to open documents?

For MYOB, can you click start and search for it.

Else that you will need to install again when in this user account.
