I have Quiken Deluxe 2012 for Windows. Recently when I close the program, it does not stay on my C drive. When I try to open it, I get a window asking me if I want to open a data file on this computer, Restore a data file from a back up disc, or Start over and create a new data file. I click on the first choce, but cannot find the quicken file with my current data. So, I have go to my back up hard disc and restore the lasted file. However, it does not appear to restore it to the C drive. This problem starte a few weeks ago. Should I try reloading quicken onto my C drive and then restore the data file from the back up drive? What would you suggest. Thank you , XXXXX XXXXX

Greetings,
Many programs will "help us" by remembering where files were from the last use of the program.
Quickbooks is remembering that the data file is on the backup drive.
To make the program remember the C drive as the proper place to look:
1. Copy a backup to the C drive (always keep a another backup copy)
2. Restore that backup from the C drive
3. Close and reopen to see if the C drive is now what is remembered for company location.
Can you try this and let me know, please?
I have tried it, but I am afraid I am making things worse.
I tried what you suggested. I am afraid I am complicating things and will have stuff copied all over my computer. When I try to open the saved file on the C drive, I get the message that I cannot open it because it is a read only file.
Or are you just trying the file in explorer or not from within Quickbooks?
The file should not be able to be opened except from in the Quickbooks program.
That is proper so that other programs can not change the file contents.
Are you trying to open the company from in Quickbooks?
Let me try again. I thought I copied the file into Quicken.
I am trying to open it in "Quicken". I do not have "Quicken books" I have Quicken Deluxe 2012.
Sorry, my mistake (as I go back and forth to help different people) it is QUicken.
So, open the Quicken program first and then and go to where you put the file on the C drive.
When you start Quicken, it opens the last file you used (located in the Quicken folder by default). To work with a different file in the same folder, select the File menu and select Open. Quicken can also help you find a file in another folder.
If you want, there is an article on copying files from within the QUicken program at http://quicken.intuit.com/support/help/backup--restore--file-issues/copy-a-quicken-data-file/GEN82381.html
Can you open the file on the C drive?
From my backup external hard disc, I made a CD of the data file. I then used this CD to restore the file to my C drive. This seems to have solved the problem Now when I click on the Quicken Icon on my desktop, the data file opens. So, I think it is restored and the program remembers where to look for the file. So, I think the problem is solved.
