The fluctuation your seeing is usually caused by air pockets that can be due to low coolant and many times, a blown head gasket. You need to fill the cooling system and pressure test it with all the plugs removed to determine if you are losing any pressure into any of the cylinders.

its leaking at the middle rear of the engine.   also, if i am driving, the temp seems to be low. if i stop, it will rise steadily, and stop at about 220 degrees. the other day i was driving and it went all the way into the red, and the warning light came on, i turned into a parking lot, and when did, the light went off and dropped to about 1/4. heres kinda a mock up of where its leaking,

You still need to determine what is leaking and repair it.

It's nnormal for the temmp to rise at idle up to about 225 because that is where the fans are programmed to come on but it shout come down at that point. If it's still leaking, you have to expect problems. ffix the leaks and then see what you have.

What do you want a different opinion on, whether it's safe to drive an overheating vehicle?
