I have a 14-year old male dog, he has been very healthy and energetic for years, but in the last couple of weeks we have noticed a change in him, he seems to be swelling around the stomach area but is doing both of his bathroom breaks. Do you have any suggestions as to what might be wrong with him? We don't want to put him to sleep because he has so much life to him, but we don't want him to suffer either, please give me your advice I would truly appreciate it!
Leslie

The fear with a dog this age and with the symptoms that you are seeing is that the dog has a heart issue. If this is the case, you will see swelling around the chest and abdomen. This is because fluid accumulates around the heart and lungs when there is a heart condition.

I suggest that you see the vet with the dog as soon as you are able to rule this out and to get a general exam.

Heart issues are often treatable if you can catch them early enough.

Let me know if you still have questions.
