In regards to your question, it is quite normal for them to pant a lot and I can tell you that my own 8 month old Newfie is panting quite a bit in this weather. So, as long as Pancakes is eating/drinking normally, has pink gums, and active then we'd not be worried here. Just make sure to keep her cool in this hot weather (fans, paddling pools) but it is quite a normal behaviour for the breed. My Abyssinian cat Gomez has suddenly stopped eating. He eats a very small amount and moves very little throughout the day, I'm just worried and was wondering if there is something we can do before deciding on going to the vet. He is 11 years old and we've only had him about a year now and don't have much experience with cats.

Customer: There aren't that many differences from before except the lack of energy and appetite. He's still friendly, but he keeps hiding under desks and my bed.

That's fine, you can let him rest and check when he is up. We just don't want any belly pain/tensing but also want those gums lovely pink (not pale/white). If those are abnormal then we'd want him seen urgently.Otherwise, in regards to appetite loss in the elderly cat, we do have a few worries here for Gomez. Specifically, we have to consider issues like grumbling bacterial infection, viral disease, pancreatitis, metabolic conditions (ie hyperthyroidism), organ disease (ie liver or kidney troubles) toxin and/or foreign material ingestion (less likely here for him).Now if Gomez is turning away from food, then his signs could be induced by nausea even if he has not shown any vomiting (often nauseous cats go off their food rather then eat/vomit like a dog would). To rule out nausea as an anorexia differential, you can try him on antacid therapy. Pet safe options we can use include Pepcid (More Info/Dose @http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/famotidine-pepcid), or Tagamet (More Info/Dose Here @ http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/cimetidine-hcl-tagamet). Whichever you choose, we’d give this 20 minutes before food to allow absorption. Of course, do double check with your vet if she has a known health issues or is on any medications you haven't mentioned. As well, you will want to try and see if you can get him eating (as I am sure you have been). Favourite foods are allowed or you can tempt her with a light/easily digestible diet. Examples of this would be boiled chicken, boiled white fish, scrambled eggs (made with water and not milk), meat baby food (do avoid the ones with garlic powder in the ingredients) or there are also veterinary prescription diets that can be used here (ie Hill’s I/D or Royal Canin’s sensitivity.) Though if tempting doesn’t work, then we do have to consider initiating syringe feeds to get food in. In that case, we can offer or syringe feed watered down Hill's A/D, Royal Canin Recovery, or Clinicare Canine/Feline Liquid Diet. All of these are critical care diets that are calorically dense, so a little goes a long way nutrition-wise.On top off all of this, you do need to keep an eye on his water intake. Since you noted that he may not be drinking well, then we do want to check his hydration at this point. To check his hydration and make sure that he isn’t becoming dehydrated, there are a few things we can test at home. One is whether the eyes appear sunken, if the gums are tacky instead of wet/moist, and whether he has a "skin tent" when you lift the skin. They use a big dog but it makes it easier to see and the principles are exactly the same) If you are seeing any signs of dehydration already, then you do want to have your kitty seen by his vet before this gets out of control.In regards to what you can do to help stave off dehydration at home (though do note that if he is already then he will likely need more the oral rehydration), encourage him to drink by offering fresh water or even low-sodium chicken broth. As well, wet foods (as mentioned above) are 35% water, so getting him to eat will help us deal with water intake as well. If he isn't amenable to drinking, you may wish to offer unflavored pedialyte via syringe feeding. While we cannot do this if they are vomiting, it may be an option for this situation if he has had no more vomiting. A typical maintenance rate for hydration in an animal 48mls per kilogram of his body weight a day. If you do give syringe pedialyte, this should obviously be divided up into multiple offerings through the day rather then all at once. This value will give you the total he needs for the day and is a good starting point to give you an idea of his daily requirement. If he does vomit if you give pedialyte, I would discontinue this as a therapy. (since we don’t want vomiting because of our intervention).Overall, Gomez's signs do raise some worries. So, we do need to be careful here with him. If he is sleeping, we can let him rest for now but once he is up we need to make sure he is passing urine and would want to start the above for him. If you do but do not see improvement in 12-24 hours or he worsens (vomits, etc), then you do want to get your vet involved at that stage. They can assess hydration, check for signs of any sinister lumps/bumps or internal issues. As well, you may consider having them check a blood sample to assess the state of his organs. They can also cover him with antibiotics, anti-nausea/vomiting medication by injection and even appetite stimulating drugs if necessary. My blood test result have just come back with a high ferritin level of 442ng/ml. I checked against blood test results that I had done in 2015 and my levels were even higher. Is this something i need to worry about? I will attach results

Possible because if it was due to any other cause then the levels should have stayed elevated or you should have had other symptoms, but given that you have pain in your joints and stiuff joints then you SHOULD be evaluated for arthritis as well. Hello again,I am glad to hear that further treatments are being used. Often for our CRF kitties, we want them on kidney supportive medication (ie Azodyl, phosphate binders, Semintra, Benazepril) to support and optimize what kidney function the still have. As well, subcutaneous fluids at home are ideal since it will help keep the kidneys flushing out toxins/metabolites and can just help keep them ticking along and those levels at a stable point. Just in case you are daunted by giving those at all, HERE is a good reference video on giving fluids. And that often is what keeps us from these cycles of the toxins building until they feel unwell. So, I am glad to see your vet's plans are spot on and ideal for Buster. Otherwise, in regards to your question, I'd lean more to deciding if we continue IV fluids based on him and how he feels. A lot of people get hung up on the numbers but in kidney kitties how they feel is actually more important and a better gauge on how to approach treating. So, if he is getting back to normal, we could give another 12-24 hours with a view to having him start the home care treatments. But for his long term its those home care that will keep him steady, stable and feeling like himself. My basset is throwing up water, and is not eating. She had diareha that was dark colored with no solids. This has been going on for a week now.

Hello again, Now with these signs already having been ongoing for a week with Penny, we do need to tread with care for her. Especially since these persisting signs do fit with a possible lingering bacterial or viral gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, parasites/protozoa infections, general dietary indiscretions, and ingestion of harmful items (hopefully not). And at her age, we also have to keep in mind that systemic issues (ie metabolic disease, organ troubles, IBD, cancer, etc) can also play a role in lingering signs like this. With this all in mind, as long as she can keep water down, we can try some home supportive care to try to settle her stomach. To start, if she hasn’t just vomited (since otherwise we’d need to rest her stomach for a few hours first), then you can consider treating her with an antacid. Common OTC pet safe options would be: Pepcid (More Info/Dose @http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/famotidine-pepcid) or Zantac (More Info/Dose @ http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/ranitidine-hcl-zantac). Whichever you choose, we’d give this 20 minutes before food to allow absorption. Of course, do double check with your vet if she has a known health issues or is on any medications you haven't mentioned. Though if you give this and she cannot keep it down due to nausea that is usually a red flag that we need to bypass her mouth with injectable anti-vomiting medication from her vet. Afterwards, you can consider starting her on an easily digestible diet like cooked white rice with boiled chicken, boiled white fish, cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, or meat baby food (as long as its garlic/onion free). The aim of these diets is that they will be better tolerated/absorbed by the compromised gut. Therefore, it should get more nutrients in and result in less GI upset/diarrhea. Fiber (ie canned pumpkin) and OTC probiotics (ie Benebac, Fortiflora) can be added to these meals to firm those loose stools quicker and support digestion. As long as improvement is being seen, I usually advise continuing this until the signs are settled, and then weaning her slowly back to her normal diet. As well, if she is very runny we can also use a pet safe anti-diarrheal. As I am sure you appreciate, these would not be a cure for infectious issues; but it can still be of benefit. It will reduce diarrhea load, allow the body to absorb more water/nutrients, and soothe the upset gut. In regards to safe options, the one we most commonly use is Kaolin/Kaopectate (More Info/Dose @ http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/kaolin-and-pectin-kapectolin-k-p)). This is available OTC at most pharmacies. Otherwise, Propectalin, Canikur, Fast Balance, and Protexin Pro-Fiber (all OTC at vets, pet stores, and even Amazon) would be another option. All will slow diarrhea and those last ones have the added bonus of providing support to the delicate good GI bacteria. So, these can be used as a short-term means of soothing her upset GI. Finally since a week of upper and lower Gi signs really raise concerns of dehydration, we need to keep an eye on her hydration. To check that she isn't dehydrated, there are a few things you can test. Further to checking for gum moisture, do make sure she doesn’t have sunken eyes and that she doesn’t have a "skin tent" when you lift the skin. If you are seeing any signs of dehydration already, then that would be our cue to have her seen before this becomes an additional issue for her (especially as it is often dehydration that makes them feel unwell). Overall, we do need to be careful with Penny given how long she has had these signs. Therefore, we’d want to start supportive care to settle her stomach. If she cannot keep that or water down at any point, appears dehydrated already, or doesn’t respond to the above within 12-24 hours; then we'd want to get her vet involved. They can assess her hydration, test a stool sample, make sure there is nothing in her stomach that shouldn't be there or any sinister viruses present. Depending on their findings, her vet can treat her with injectable anti-vomiting medication, fluids, +/- antibiotics to settle her stomach, and get her back feeling like herself.
