Customer Question

Is there a law that requires the DMV to block a person from renewing his expired drivers license because he owes back state taxes? At the moment he is in process with the State Franchise tax Board settling this debt? Thanks Rhett

Hello,

Yes, unfortunately, states have a way of getting your attention when you owe them funds for one reason or another. They can suspend your license and require you to clear the debt before they will allow you to reinstate it. I don't know where you are, but here's an article on New York's law, for example.

This has proved to be a successful way to force ticket, tax, child support and other types of scofflaws to pay up.
