I have cypress trees in my backyard in Florida. THe area

Customer Question

I have cypress trees in my backyard in Florida. THe area around them is lower and when it rains, lots of water stands around them. We want to level the ground. Can you simply level the ground around the trees or will damage the trees?

Hello and welcome. My name is ***** ***** I'm a biologist with a special interest in Arboriculture. I'll be happy to help you today. And time you change the level of the soil around a tree, you risk damage to it. When you raise the level, the roots are often suffocated. If you only need to fill in with an inch or two, that would be fine, but you would need to stay back from the trunk even with that small amount. Even a few inches of fill makes it so less air can enter the soil. If that soil also holds water, we have an increased risk of fungal organisms thriving and entering the roots. That clogs them, and over a period of a few years, the trees die.I understand that you don't want standing water under the trees, but raising the soil level does most often result in damage to trees. I know this isn't what you want to hear, but I believe you deserve honesty. Perhaps a better solution would be to look into the possibility of creating a small trench lined with gravel for the water to drain into.If you have more questions just let me know. I wish I could have told you it is ok to raise the soil level, but unfortunately, it isn't.Anna
