What is the cut off age for a lung transplant.I have copd and 77,I am in excellent health,no other health problems,I am active,I golf, bowl, and am not overweight.I use oxygen most of the time.Would like to continue being active but it is getting harder all time,I also use a treadmill and weights, maybe not as much as I should. Can you help me? Joan
Hi Joan. Yes i can help you.

There is no age limit cut off and in fact, you sound like an excellent candidate.

You may also be a good candidate for lung reduction surgery. Both improve survival in select cases.

In transplant surgery, age is really just a number. Overall health is more important.

The first step is being evaluated at a large transplant center. Where do you live?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
I live in Fargo,N.Dak.Thank you so much for your answer,I also didn't ask the cost of the operation and is it covered by insurance. Also what is a lung reduction surgery?I am willing to go to wherever I can be evaluated.
What is the closest large hospital?

Mayo?

Yes Mayo is the largest, but my Doctor here ask them about lung transplants and was told I was too old.The hospital here is Sanford Medical Center.

I don't think that is correct.

They shouldn't reject someone without an evaluation.

I have 80 year old patients that are healthier than 60 year olds.

Can you get an evaluation at Mayo? What is the next closes large transplant center like that?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
I can certainly try at Mayo,I don't know the next closest one.Do I have my Dr. make the appointment or what is recomended.
I would just call to make an appointment.

Insurance will cover the transplant.

You may have a few thousand out of pocket though.

Here is the number, Joan.
