Customer Question

I have a '92 SeaDoo XP which I purchased in 1995. It has had annual maintenance. In 1998, we threw a rod bearing and had the engine rebuilt (rings and bearings) at a local reputable dealer. The machine has had one to two tanks of gas run through it each of the last 10 or so seasons. The machine has been hard starting and needed to be choked for about 15 seconds when cold for the last few years, but after warm up, starts quickly. My son-in-law was going to drive it and had a hard time getting it started. He intermittently choked it and didn't choke it for over a minute before he got it started. He went across the lake and he let up on the throttle and slowed down and the engine stopped and he was unable to get it running again. So far, I have added gas, changed plugs, battery voltage is 12.11, with booster pack reads 12.4, checked fuel filter--was very clean--removed plugs, poured in small amount of gas, replaced plugs and still wouldn't fire. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Ed

Hi and welcome to Just answer.

Initially, 92's were hard to start cold because there is a cutaway in the choke plate that would let too much air in & not cause enough restriction in the carb to draw fuel.

Seadoo's fix was a small "blockoff" that bolted in the throat of the carb & when the choke was closed it would block up the hole. These parts are long gone by now so I would install a primer kit & it will start right up.

Hi Chester, Thank you for your response. My apologies for not making it clear that there is no gas getting to the engine and there is also no spark. Although the primer kit sounds like it will help the past problems with cold start, there appear to be other problems that have not been present in the past. As I mentioned, I have put gas in the cylinders numerous times and spun the engine over for extended periods of time resulting in no sign of the engine firing at all. I have had an ignition problem in the past (no spark) but not in the last 10 years. It has been remedied by opening the gray electrical box in front and to the left of the engine and leaving it open for a day or two to dry out? This has not helped now. However, we have had very high humidity for the last several days.

This is a lot of information. I am very open to discussing this on the phone.

I am sorry, I am not available for phone support because I'm from Asia.

Thanks for your response, I have couple of questions.

May I know your the exact problem of your ski now?

Have you try to check your electrical box if there is corrosion on connectors, wires etc. that can possibly cause of loose connection and voltage drop.

Is it cranking?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

There is no corrosion in the electrical box. Everything is clean. The starter spins the engine over freely as it normally has.

Ok if that is the case then you have problem on fuel lines. In 92's seadoo models, that is the common problem. Usually we fixed that kind of problem using primer kit. That is worth to give it a try.

Just try to install it, then let me know if still not working.

Hope this information will be helpful.
