Hello and welcome. My name is ***** ***** I'm a biologist with a special interest in koi. I'm sorry to hear your fish is having a problem. Some additional information will help me figure out the best steps for you to take. When you say she is not swimming, do you mean she is lying on the bottom, or floating, or what? What is near her anus? Will she eat anything?Thank you.

Thank you for getting back to me. It is possible she is carrying eggs that she is unable to pass. You can send a picture, and it would be very helpful. Click on the paper clip icon that is in the tool bar at the top of the space where you type. Instructions on how to post a photo will pop up.

Hi again Denise. It looks like you are still having problems with pictures. We can try to proceed without a picture, if you'll give me the following information:Is the swelling right in front of her lower back fin? Is it on both sides? Are any of her scales sticking up, giving her a pine cone like appearance? Will she eat?Thank you.

If you are pretty sure she has eggs, I'll give you a measure to try. You'll need to set up a hospital tank for her, and you'll also need another container for what we call a bath. The hospital tank should have water from the pond, and a source of aeration.

A daily Epsom salts bath may help. Use 1 tablespoon per every gallon of water. Leave her in it for 15 minutes each day. No longer - that's why it has to be a separate container. This can sometimes help a fish resorb the eggs. Make sure the bath temperature is the same as the water she lives in, and that chlorine has been removed. You can also use Maracyn in her hospital tank for her to prevent infection. Warmer water temperatures can also help, but raise the temperature gradually.

If she is eating well and doesn't seem to be in distress, it's possible she will eventually resorb the eggs on her own. If she seems ill, of course, that isn't going to happen.

A fish veterinarian can tell you for sure if she has eggs. If so there are things he/she can give to help the eggs pass. Pituitary extract is one. There are two other hormones that are used to induce spawning. They are luteinizing release hormone and HCG ( a human hormone). All of the hormones are by prescription only, and have to be obtained from a an aquatic vet. The hormones are injected. You can read more about them here:

Here is where you can find a fish vet:

If none are nearby, a local vet may be willing to work with one of them by phone consultation to help your koi. If you have more questions, just let me know. I hope your fish will be fine.
