Hello and welcome. My name is ***** ***** I'm a biologist with a special interest in fish. I'm sorry to hear of this problem. It may be that there will be nothing you can do, but if you can send me a picture, I can take a look. You can upload a photo by clicking on the paper clip icon in the tool bar at the top of the space where you type. Instructions will then pop up. Thank you.

Hi again. It appears you went offline without seeing my request for a photo. I don't want you to have to wait any longer so I'm going to go ahead and answer without it. The 'cap' on an oranda goldfish is called the wen. Unless it is totally blocking the fish's vision, it's best to leave it alone. However, poor breeding practices over the years have led to many oranda with a wen that just keeps growing. The best thing to do when the eyes are covered is have an aquatic vet surgically remove part of the wen. This link will take you to a directory of such vets:

Some fish owners do the surgery themselves. It is risky, and it would be illegal for me to tell you exactly how to do it, since it is a veterinary procedure. But I can give you a website that has step-by-step instructions, with pictures:

If you have more questions, let me know in a REPLY. I hope that whatever you decide to do, it will work out well.

Hello again. How is your oranda doing? Do you need any additional information?
